French cuisine meets the Pacific at 71 Palm, where chef Didier Poirier brings the tastes and traditions of his motherland to coastal California. For authentic French food, with no trace of California nouveau flourishes, this is the place to eat. Think onion soup, Kobe beef with a side of pommes frites and creme brulee. What could be better? Perhaps learning to make it at home: Poirier also offers cooking classes through the restaurant. But it's hard to beat the comfortable, polished vibe at the restaurant itself, tucked inside of a restored Craftsman-style home. It's pretty much like a warm Paris bistro, with the obvious exception of the Eiffel Tower and the French-speaking wait staff. But being able to surf in the morning and eat lamb Provencal in the evening makes up for the geographic difference.
