Tantra has the design savvy and sprawling layout of the latest generation of L.A.'s restaurant-slash-clubs. Some of the best dishes are to be found in the list of à la carte vegetables. And those include fiery black lentils (<i>dal</i>) cooked overnight in the heat retained by the tandoori oven and a milder yellow <i>dal</i> laced with cumin and onion seeds. Later in the evening the lounge takes on a hyperactive nightclub vibe with DJs and lots of tipsy hotties stumbling around in precariously high heels. Stiff specialty cocktails are to blame.

TIPS: When you're done with Tantra keep your good time rolling by grabbing a late-night margarita at neighboring El Conquistador. The scene in the colorful upstairs bar can be equally raucous.
