Bret McKenzie's Best of L.A.

Know something we don't?
When presented with the option of grabbing dinner in a strip mall, visitors to L.A. often have a dismissive or condescending response. Happily, Alegria on Sunset offers a path to enlightenment for all but the most closed-minded. Don’t be surprised when, after sampling succulent-yet-perfectly-crispy pork carnitas or piquant pollo asado con salsa chipotle, your former L.A.-snob houseguest announces his intention to move forthwith to the 90026. If, on the other hand, Alegria’s scrumptious cuisine and cheerful Oaxacan décor fails to sway your visitor, perhaps an icy mango agua fresca spiked with Patron (there’s no alcohol in-house, but you’re welcome to BYO) will convince them. Cash only.
TIPS: When this place got written up as a strip mall gem in the New York Times we soon found ourselves dining next to Heather Graham. Not in the mood for hype, head next door to tiny, tasty El Cochinito.
