Know something we don't?
It used to be that the Smog Cutter was just another undiscovered dive with a good jukebox (Creedence Clearwater, Grand Funk Railroad, "Let It Bleed"-era Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin). Other added attractions were the sassy Asian waitresses and a sometimes sketchy Eastside location. But that was back in the '80s. When the '90s hit, every respectable -- and not so respectable -- place got a karaoke machine so anyone could be a star. With that, the Smog Cutter's usual clientele of Vietnam vets and hard-time good-time drinkers got treated to local and touring bands singing their versions of "Fever," "New York, New York" or "Born to Be Wild." On the weekends there's usually a line, but drinks are cheap, the karaoke is always going and you never know who's next to be upstaged.
