Top places to have afternoon tea

Know something we don't?
Baked beans on toast, steak and kidney pie, mushy peas—we know how the British culinary arts got their reputation, and Tudor House knows its specialities to a T. But they are also willing to augment, with, say, a kir royale or a tomato/mushroom/brie sandwich. Let the expats flock here for old world favorites just this side of blood sausage. Others can indulge in the single greatest gift the British bequeathed the world—afternoon tea. Tudor House serves it up in three versions—Victorian, Afternoon, and Cream—alongside one of the robust black cuppas which fueled an empire. It may look a little precious around these parts, what with the floral wallpaper and all the porcelain, but the buttery sausage-filled pastries and ham-and-tomato sandwiches are suitable for all comers, as is breakfast. In the market/bakery next door, scones and thick Devonshire cream—the bread and butter (accent on the butter) of the British Isles—are available for takeaway, as is a can of Bart’s Spotted Dick—a sort of currant-filled sponge cake, if you must know.
