So quintessentially Californian it’s argued that California cuisine was born here. Michael’s is a Santa Monica standard that makes everyone’s “best of” list year upon year, just as famous for its shady garden party setting as its chicken and goat cheese salad. The obsessively seasonal menu relies much on grilling and little bursts of flavor and main course salads—your typical Cobb and nicoise, but also lobster and papaya. Michael’s pioneered sauces like chardonnay cream and put Fontina cheese on pizza before CPK was a corporate dynasty.
