Know something we don't?
Historic landmarks aren't easy to find in Los Angeles, which makes this old pier all the more fun to explore. Built in 1908 and recently expanded to re-introduce a carnival of fun rides to the wooden timbers of this bustling flotilla, the Santa Monica Pier is constantly buzzing with activity.
Located where Colorado Boulevard spills into the sea, the pier greets you with a 1922 carousel and ends with fishing decks and the real "Baywatch" headquarters, all perched above the blue Pacific. In between are restaurants, gift shops, arcades.
The ocean front family amusement park has the world's first solar-powered Ferris wheel. the nine-story Pacific wheel gives riders a lovely view of the Santa Monica coastline.
Visiting the pier should be considered a rite of passage for tourists and residents alike.
