McCabe's offers a bare-bones setting for the best guitar music west of the 405 Freeway. Legends, traveling minstrels and local talent--they all seem to pass through McCabe's at some point. They may be there to get their guitars fixed; the club has a day job as one of the oldest stringed instrument stores in the city. After hours, shows take place in a sizeable, but still intimate, back room. The room's walls are covered with guitars, banjos, ukuleles and the like, with snacks and non-alcoholic beverages served around performance time. The only downside to this makeshift environment can be found in the folding chairs, which get more and more uncomfortable as a set goes on. But it's worth it to hear all varieties of freak-, psych-, free- and whatever-folk in an achingly intimate room. Keep up your hippie instincts with organic everything at
