About
Moses wandered 40 years in the desert. Noah spent 40 nights on the high seas. And the Santa Monica Museum of Art operated for more than a year as just a name, not a physical place. The old spot -- near the beach in Frank Gehry's Edgemar complex -- closed its doors in April of 1997. The new 10,000-foot Bergamot Station space didn't open until May of 1998. By all accounts, the wait was well worth it. Much-ballyhooed exhibitions were by gingerbread house wizard Liza Lou and the notable grandfather-and-son pair, Al and Beck Hansen.
In the 12 years since its 1988 inception, the SMMOA has commissioned and premiered works from artists such as Victor Estrada, Eleanor Antin, David Bunn, Bob Flanagan, Betye Saar, Amy Gerstler, Alexis Smith, Daniel J. Martinez and Mary Sun. Presume the cutting edge here, and expect plenty of sound and visual art.
Visiting
The museum is located at Bergamot Station, a historic train depot that now serves as a complex for 33 galleries and arts institutions. The address is 2525 Michigan Ave., which is just off of Cloverfield Blvd. There is plenty of free parking available to all visitors -- just follow the signs. The museum is in building G-1, at the southwest corner of the parking lot.
Hours of operation at the museum are Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The museum is closed Sundays, Mondays and all legal holidays. Suggested admission is $5.

Dining and entertainment
For a convenient lunch spot, you won't do better than The Gallery Café, located in building A3 near the entrance to Bergamot Station. The menu specials change daily, offering a variety of food and beverages. To find other restaurants, you'll have to drive a short distance from Bergamot Station. Café Bizou is a popular California-French bistro chain that serves upscale cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. L.A. Farm is another popular local restaurant that's ideal for lunch or brunch, offering French cuisine at moderate prices.
