Richard Heller Gallery

By normal standards this is a large gallery, at least physically. Here at Bergamot, though, it's considered a half-space, a hangar-mate with the Gail Harvey Gallery. But forget physical size: What really matters at a contemporary gallery are breadth, vision and an instinct for the au courant. Measured by those standards, Richard Heller is more Goliath than David.

Visiting

The gallery is located in space B5A of Santa Monica's Bergamot Station, an eight-acre complex that houses more than 30 of the city's most prominent arts institutions. Bergamot Station is located at 2525 Michigan Ave., which is at the very end of the street. Hours of operation are Tuesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Some galleries have slightly different hours, so be sure to call ahead.) Free parking is available for all visitors; just follow the signs.

Dining and entertainment

For a convenient lunch spot, you won't do better than The Gallery Café, located in building A3 near the entrance to Bergamot Station. The menu specials change daily, offering a variety of food and beverages. To find other restaurants, you'll have to drive a short distance from Bergamot Station. Café Bizou is a popular California-French bistro chain that serves upscale cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. L.A. Farm is another popular local restaurant that's ideal for lunch or brunch, offering French cuisine at moderate prices.
