Theatricality is an element found in many Los Angeles restaurants, a fitting trait for a town built on illusions. Zucca Ristorante looks like a set for an Italian epic, perhaps directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. Visitors who walk in off the sun-baked downtown streets are generally amazed to find themselves in what appears to be an authentic Italian villa. This is no mean feat for a restaurant located just two blocks from the ultra-modern Staples Center. Zucca’s vaulted ceilings, wood floors and antique cabinetry give an impression of age and elegance. Crystal chandeliers provide the tables with a soft, pleasant light. A secluded outdoor terrace features cypress trees and a great spot for dinner on a cool evening. The simple menu specializes in wood-fired Neopolitan pizzas, house-made pastas and fresh fish and fine cheeses imported from Italy.
