Xooro

In the tradition of the churrerias of Madrid, Spain, Xooro (pronounced “Sure-oh”) peddles gourmet Spanish fritters filled with flavored crème and rolled in an array of toppings. Meant to be enjoyed with hot chocolate, the original churro comes stuffed with vanilla custard and covered in cinnamon sugar. But that’s just the baseline of decadence. Create your own custom churro by choosing from fillings like mango and pistachio and toppings like coconut and white chocolate. Or choose from the shop’s rotating creations (a new one is added every other week), such as the Turkish hazelnut, filled with dulce de leche goat milk and dressed in caramel candy coating. Like ice cream, the churros are fragile treats, best eaten right away. Take a seat in the minimalist ultra-mod space with polished concrete floors and molded plastic Eames-style chairs, and you’ll be transported to a café in Andalusia.

TIPS: If you must take your churro to go—for nibbling while strolling nearby 3rd Street Promenade or shopping at the adjacent Santa Monica Farmers Market—ask for one of their trademark tubes, which keep the treats warm and help prevent them from breaking.
