About
With its circular, red leather booths, dark wood paneling and crab-stuffed mushrooms, the Smoke House feels like a steakhouse that's been time-warped from 1946 -- which makes sense, since that's the year it opened right across the street from Warner Bros. Amid the dim lighting and vintage country club décor, you can almost feel the ghosts of studio execs slicing into their filet mignons as they put the make on the newest starlet in their stable. If you're looking to booze it up over a three-martini lunch and live out your Mad Men fantasies, there's no better place than the Smoke House. Bonus - the martinis come with sidecars! The menu is heavy on high-quality "continental cuisine" i.e. sizable hunks of red meat like porterhouse, ribeye and New York steaks, prime rib, tournedos of beef, chateaubriand, rack of lamb, barbecued ribs and more. The menu also includes a handful of chicken and fish dishes. But unless you’re ordering a lobster tail to go with your flatiron steak, why bother? This is the Smoke House, baby. Start your meal the right way, with a basket of the Smoke House's famous garlic bread, which looks nuclear orange and tastes like it's been dipped in butter. (We're guessing the chef uses at least two sticks of butter per loaf.) Trust us: get the full basket! In fact, if you have to count your pennies, a thrifty (not to mention alcoholic) Smoke House patron could make a perfectly balanced meal with just a dirty vodka martini and a basket of garlic bread.
