Rustic and comfortable, the vibe at Primitivo is much more Northern California than Venice. Its front wine bar serves numerous varietals by the glass along with plates of excellent cold and hot tapas. If you want a seat at the bar, though, get there close to opening because seats fill up quickly and people tend to linger. The happy hour from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. features $3 sangria and $3 glasses of the house red wine. If a seat isn’t available at the bar, your best bet is on the back porch where you can usually sneak a smoke. Best to go with a large crowd, too, so you can sample the large variety of small dishes. Primitivo also hosts frequent wine tastings, so check their web site for dates, times and prices.  Parking is tight and some of the nearby side streets are a little sketchy so it’s best to valet.
