Go any time day or night and you will always find a line. The city’s best hot dogs? A decent place coasting on reputation alone? You decide. But it’s one of those L.A. legends that’s been around so long (since 1939) that it’s earned a place in the cultural firmament. Located on a dingy strip of La Brea, it’s diametrically opposed to the atmosphere at nearby Real Food Daily and M Café, and that’s the point. They have 15 kinds of all-beef dogs, from the number-one chili dog to the Brooklyn pastrami Swiss cheese dog, and all come with that special “snap” due to an all-natural casing. The menu has expanded over the years and now includes burgers and burritos. Open late on weekdays (until 2 a.m.), and even later on weekends (3 a.m.), it does a brisk after-bar business.
TIPS: Cash only. There is free parking/valet. Though it looks like carry out only, there are tables in the back. To avoid the lines, visit on a rainy day.
