Steaming coffee, a plush couch and a good paperback. Pretty nice combo, right? Well, The Library in Long Beach has managed to add real atmosphere to this trendy equation. It's a roomy, intellectual hangout and a refreshing detour from the usual coffeeshop scene.
The dark-hued walls are accented with antique mirrors and bookshelves brimming with used hardcover and paperback books, and the Library's quirky, chatty staff seem to be dying to help you find the book or 'zine you might be in the mood for. Don't sweat it if you can't put that pulp fiction book down, because almost all of The Library's books are on sale for not much more than a dollar. Selected furniture can be purchased as well.
Food-wise, check out the banana-flavored cheesecake and brick-size Rice Krispie treats. It would be a sin not to indulge in their cornucopia of java-junky treats, including tasty iced drinks like Hazelnut Hip Swinger, Leprechaun Lipsmacker and Vanilla Goddess. If you're hungry for a bagel, they have plenty of fresh flavors for cheap. Whether you're downing a shot of espresso and bolting for work or settling in for a long, relaxing conversation over a couple of scoops of ice cream, The Library is a cool place to spend the day.
