Located on busy Hillhurst Avenue, San Sui is the calm amidst the storm. Providing an intimate setting at a pace that lets you relax, a meal at San Sui can feel like a true getaway. Service is always gracious, which makes San Sui a comfort after a hard day's work or play.
The food is considered Japanese country cuisine, but there is more of an emphasis on vegetables and brown rice than rapidly prepared sushi. Tofu is served a myriad of ways -- sautéed, grilled or fried, with teriyaki or a spicy garlic sauce. The miso soup is chock full of potatoes and vegetables. The tempura is thinly battered and lightly fried. Entrées at San Sui come compartmentalized, allowing you to savor one thing at a time. Or heck, eat 'em all at once if you want. Sake and beer are available, as is a selection of aromatic herb teas good for cleansing the soul as well as the palette.
Rock star sightings are infrequent, although Beck, members of the Geraldine Fibbers and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have been known to eat here. -- Elizabeth Garo
