About
Though “In” restaurants in Los Angeles last about as long as the latest “It” girl, Mr. Chow defies all odds and remains an impossibly chic spot that still draws the rich, famous and well-heeled decades after its debut in Beverly Hills. If you need any proof, just look to the paparazzi who stalk the door virtually every night of the week. In terms of food, Mr. Chow does upscale Chinese that is light, inventive and oh-so-very expensive. Particularly good are the Peking duck, grilled filet mignon and, yes, simple fried rice. Typical of the exclusive, clubby feel of the place, the waiters offer to choose your meal for you based on your tastes and it’s a fun conceit, as long as you’re well aware he’s not nearly as budget-conscious as you are. Some say the cuisine doesn’t dazzle quite like the celebrity sightings, but it’s nevertheless one of those Hollywood experiences, like Spago and The Ivy, that you just have to try.
TIPS: The bill does not come itemized, only totaled, so it’s not an ideal place to go Dutch with penny-pinching friends. Of course valet is offered, but at night it’s not too difficult to find parking on the neighboring streets once all the shops are closed.

Whenever I take my friend Sy to Mr. Chow, he tells me wonderful stories about London in the '70s, when the original Mr Chow there was...
