You’d think the thin crust pizzas from former Spago pizza chef Ed LaDou would be the main attraction here, but in fact the most popular item on the menu is sought after by pregnant mothers, not pizza connoisseurs. The Salad, or so-called “Maternity Salad,” purports to induce labor in those at or beyond their due dates, and Caioti Café has volumes of guest books filled with success stories to prove it. The simple mix of romaine, watercress, walnuts and gorgonzola comes dressed in basil-balsamic vinaigrette with a “super secret” ingredient (dressing can be purchased separately by the bottle). There’s no definitive scientific answer for the salad’s legendary potency, but certain plant derivatives may account for those uterine contractions. Whether urban legend or homeopathic miracle, The Salad has endured since 1993. After baby is born, Caioti isn’t a bad place to come either, with a wide selection of the aforementioned pizzas, sandwiches, and pastas, and no corkage fee.
