Things are slow to change at Twain’s, as evidenced by the diner’s ancient cash register (no wonder the restaurant only accepts cash) and original brown-on-brown ’70s decor. And, at times, they’re just plain slow. Downtime finds the waitresses lazily chopping cucumbers at the counter. Service is sluggish, but at least the waitstaff lets patrons linger, making Twain’s an ideal spot for strawberry pancakes or a guacamole burger at 3 a.m. No real surprises as far as food:  items like Southern fried chicken, spaghetti and meatballs, and the chef’s salad represent American mainstays. The restaurant’s owner, Cesare Clemens, named it after his namesake writer Samuel Clemens, otherwise known as Mark Twain. Like the author’s tales of life on the Mississippi River, Twain’s seems suspended in time. Given the atmosphere, the landmark animated sign above the restaurant may be spinning a little too fast.
