You know the drill: avoid privately owned restaurants in suburban strip malls unless your best friend owns it or it’s a sushi joint. The Whisper Café – formerly L’Artiste Patisserie – is one to break the rules for. This quaint strip-mall bakery, breakfast and lunch spot seems to have a never-ending pastry display case, and the scent of fresh bread follows the take-out patrons all the way out to the patio area. Known for its French macaroons, Whisper Café also serves freshly brewed, locally grown coffee (they grow coffee beans in North Hollywood?!). Breakfast is served all day, as are danishes, scones, sandwiches, and salads. Tell them your selection at the counter and they’ll bring it to your table once it’s ready. Skeptical about the name change? Don’t be – it’s the same adorable spot you’ve come to know and love.
