About
At the tiny Tagine in Beverly Hills, Morocco is a state of mind. Think Rick’s place from Casablanca updated for the 21st century, with a trio of savvy young owners standing in for the Humphrey Bogart character (not such a stretch for one of them, the ever-so-dreamy actor Ryan Gosling). Perfect as a date spot, the vibe is sexy and low-lit, with dramatic mirrors and lanterns. Chef Abdessamad “Ben” Benameur conceived a lighter, California-inspired menu featuring a variety of salad-like appetizers, baked salmon, striped bass and fluffy couscous. For those with time on their hands, the seven-course tasting menu is a parade of complimentary flavors served over two and a half hours every night (and exclusively on the weekends). You can also order a la carte, but why would you want to? The namesake tagines are similar to a casserole, comprised of tender meat slow-cooked with vegetables and a sauce, and the lamb and shrimp versions are particularly nice. For dessert, there is a tasty baklava and sweet mint tea.
TIPS: If you didn’t know what you were looking for, you’d probably miss the entrance, but maybe that’s the idea; keep your eyes peeled for the blue door. There are only 50 seats and it gets crowded, so reservations are strongly encouraged.
