There's something very spiritual about Roscoe's, and it ain't merely the Southern soul food. Maybe it's the bridging of the breakfast-dinner gap; maybe it's the yin and yang of maple syrup and gravy; maybe it's the bloated bliss of two entree plates, endless lemonade, sop-worthy cornbread and famously cheap pecan pie. They even have an American version of oyako don burri, the Japanese chicken-and-egg, mother-and-child omelet. Gluttony? Sure, but at least in some cultures, the Buddha's best known for his big belly.

Even if you don't care for crackpot cross-cultural culinary theories, you gotta go for a place that has a bird and a breakfast item as its logo. There are four branches: a small, Haitian-poster-art-filled space on Gower Street in Hollywood, a Pizza-Hut-looking place on Pico, one on Manchester Street and one in Pasadena. First timers, start with the basics -- the chicken and waffles (the #2, $7.10). Veterans, do what you will.
