A faded three-panel mural decorates the exterior of the Plum Tree Inn, illustrating scenes from ancient Chinese history. A carefully sculpted Bonsai tree greets visitors at the double glass doors. The interior is defined by a generous-sized waiting area, a full bar and a cavernous dining room – capable of holding more than 150 patrons -- with a soaring ceiling and muted lights. The vibe is relaxing and modern, with none of the more flamboyant elements often associated with older Chinese restaurants. The large menu specializes in Mandarin cuisine, with a special emphasis on seafood and poultry. The famous Beijing duck, which must be ordered in advance, is crispy and golden and served with pancakes, spring onion brushes and hoisin sauce. A reasonable prix fixe dinner – $18.95 per person – offers a choice of soup, appetizer and entrée, plus pork fried rice, tea and cookies.
