About
Marked by the old sign: COFFEE? TEA? FOOD? SURFBOARD?
Popular food: Hearty breakfast special -- eggs, potatoes, toast, coffee -- for less than three bucks; Juan's Breakfast Burrito, waffles and fruit; they'll substitute egg whites if you ask.
Drinks: Brewed coffee, passion fruit tea.
Seating: Counter and table seating inside; charming overgrown back patio with tables.
Ambience: Laid-back, sleepy '60s feel; be prepared for Topanga time -- service is slow; grizzled locals, neo-hippie hipsters, bikers, carpenters, musicians, the occasional model, and everyone in between.
Extras/Notes: "Everybody from peakers to creekers," says owner Pat. "Peakers are the yuppies who built the ugly houses on the peaks that destroy the view. Creekers are everybody else, living paycheck to paycheck." Renée Zellweger and David Lander (better known as Squiggy from "Laverne & Shirley") have been spotted here, but nobody pays attention. Pet-friendly. Old-school Topanga cool. Owners Pat and Kathi are salt-of-the earth hospitable. Wooden building and deck gives Old West flavor. Local art, community bulletin board. Hand-shaped wooden surfboards displayed on ceiling inside -- works of art, wrought by the legendary Scott Dunning who died of a heart attack on his surfboard in the ocean. Before it was Pat's, it was the Outside Inn -- nicknamed the Indecision Inn, cause you never knew when they'd be open. With Pat's, no need to worry.
Parking: Ample in free adjacent lot.
