About
Miso marinated Chilean sea bass and escargot bourguignon share space on Akira Hirose’s fusion menu, which showcases the best of his Japanese heritage and French training. That means lunchtime bento boxes can come with either grilled duck foie gras or tuna tartare. The popular champagne buffet brunch offers both sushi and roasted leg of lamb. In either culinary tradition, Hirose shines with seafood in preparations such as his lobster bisque, sautéed scallops, and seared yellowfin tuna Napoleon. Such spectacular cooking is matched by dramatic decor. Like a Loire chateau, the dining room is decked out in scarlet floral drapes and crimson carpet, creating a cozy, romantic lair, fireplace and all. Some may prefer the so-called winter garden room to the right of the entrance, which is modern and airier and has picture windows with views of Green Street. Just steps away from the Pasadena Playhouse, Maison Akira makes for a memorable pre-theatre dining experience for special nights when casual next-door neighbors El Portal and Sushi of Naples just won’t do.
TIPS: For truly royal treatment, ask for the omakase—Chef Hirose will prepare an elegant ten-course dinner for your entire table.
