Part the velvet curtains that skim the sidewalk on South Lake Avenue and walk back to the hidden, open air patio and small indoor lounge that is Magnolia. Candlelight and glowing glass sconces light your way. Inside, red velvet-flocked wallpaper and Philippe Starck clear plastic chairs create an urban chic mood. Outside, a leafy tree (not a magnolia, sorry) grows right through the middle of the patio, affording protection from the elements. Signature cocktails like the Sangrini—a sangria-based martini—and a good selection of wines by the glass are the main attraction, but the Southern-influenced menu is worthy of mention. Hip eats like mac ‘n’ cheese with sourdough crust, cornflake fried chicken, and fried green tomatoes offer sustenance with staying power. The crowd skews younger on Thursday DJ nights, while a more upscale, mature crowd shimmies through the velvet curtains on weekends.
