The historic Cheesewright Building is the setting for Madeleines, and it’s hard to believe that the sumptuous location was once used to build the outer skin of the atomic bomb when the Department of Defense used the space for the Manhattan Project (Einstein is rumored to have had an office across the street). Science has now given way to art—culinary, visual, and viticultural. In the sunken dining room with brick red walls, enormous picture windows, and a cavernous fireplace, you can enjoy an American menu prepared in the French tradition. Highlights include seared Sonoma foie gras with bing cherry compote, veal Delmonico, and asparagus and parmesan gelato. In the wine bar, vintage Parisian posters hang on plum colored walls. Enjoy wines by the glass, bottle, or flight as well as the full restaurant menu. A night at Madeleines may not be enough to bring about world peace, but at least you’ll be doing your part to promote more wine and less nukes. As wine bars go, you won’t get the hip factor of Vertical Wine Bistro, Bodega Wine Bar, or even 750ml, but then again you won’t run the risk of enduring any house music, either.
