Every neighborhood needs a James Beach. You can go in and have a luxury meal in the sectioned-off, lily-white dining room or you can hang out in the open-air bar festooned with board shorts and get drunk as a skunk. There’s even a club room upstairs with a reversible pool/air hockey table. The menu is solidly American (think pan-roasted halibut, stuffed pork chops and pot roast). You can also order off the menu of James Beach’s sister restaurant, Canal Club, which is right across the street. The bar scene at James Beach is one of the best on the beach. The crowds are big but never so crushing that you feel the walls closing in on you. Celebrity sightings are frequent, particularly during the week when it’s a little more quiet. Also, you can smoke in the bar at James Beach since it’s technically outdoors. Like Canal Club, parking is on the street, in the garage next door or valet. James Beach is open for lunch and dinner.
