Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2007, Hal’s really is the grande dame of Venice establishments. With its extraordinarily long bar, art-laden walls and wonderful (if pricey) menu, it draws customers from every corner of Venice society. Though Hal’s is slightly upscale, casual dress won’t draw disapproving stares from anyone at this awfully laid-back place. Two of the best nights to go are Sunday and Monday when live jazz plays from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and 9 p.m. to midnight, respectively. There’s no cover charge, either. If you’re just going to have drink, you owe it to yourself to try their famous cantaloupe martini which is sweet without being too sweet and strong to boot. The dinner menu is heavy, standard American fare (grilled rib eye, wild king salmon, pan-roasted duck). A better bet is the bar menu which features a delicious mushroom and fontina cheese pizza. Valet parking is available.
