About
No simple, predictable tacos and burritos here. This is a creative, gourmet restaurant that features chef Gabbi Patrick’s richly flavorful creations. But, first, you have to find it. There’s no sign, but enough clues to point the way. Look for a black awning, a hostess desk and at least a few people waiting for a table. Once inside and seated, you can study the menu over drinks and relax in the airy dining room. Original brick walls, high ceilings and seductive lighting set the mood between edgy and cozy. The menu is a series of modern, international twists on Mexican classics. Think truffle quesadillas, shitake mushroom tacos and lobster and crab crepes, all served with lush, bold sauces. When they’re in season, squash blossoms are the basis for special entrees and appetizers. This neighborhood is devoid of the familiar chain eateries, so take advantage of the novelty and visit the historic Watson’s Drug Store and Soda Fountain, founded in 1899. PJ’s Abbey is another turn-of-the-century venue for dining and live jazz on the weekends. Get dessert from the Blue Frog Café & Bakery or French sipping chocolate from Paris in a Cup Tea Salon. Felix Continental Café is famous for its Cuban and Spanish fare, while Byblos serves up Mediterranean specialties.
Tips: Bring an open mind and a sense of adventure. Forget everything you know about the tried-and-true Mexican staples. Expect the unexpected and expect it assertively. The flavor combinations are anything but subtle. That’s not to say they’re spicy, just complex, provocative and statement-making.
