About
Trust us, you're probably not cool enough to eat here and neither are we, which is why we'll probably see each other here every other night. This trendy 24-hour diner specializes in overpriced eggs and humbling even the most well-credentialed artiste. The self-consciously quirky diner fare is generally average but the obsessive unrequited love inspired by the place's too-cool-for-you attitude ensures that Fred's is always hopping. If you stumble in around two in the morning on a weekend you'll find this monument of icy coolness packed with suspiciously well-put-together drunks. (On weekend mornings it overflows with the crooked-haircut set and tattooed stroller-pushing parents.) The place is outfitted like a retro diner with plenty of kitschy Americana, puffy red booths and loads of coveted sidewalk seating. The menu is huge and comprehensive, featuring whimsically named items like “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love Pancake” (pancakes with peanut butter, chocolate chips and banana) “Lettuce Entertain You” (mixed greens) and “The Manhandler” (sloppy Joe). The staff is known to be slow and offish, but maybe that's just because they have to wear T-shirts emblazoned with obnoxious phrases like "Jesus is my dishwasher." Fred's is best when you're really hungry and nothing else is open. This usually happens after a long night at area bars like the Rustic Inn and the Dresden Room. It's also directly next door to the Los Feliz 3 movie theater.
TIPS: Parking is impossible in Los Feliz so be prepared to spend up to 15 minutes cruising the surrounding side streets in search of a spot. And don't be afraid to park close to Hillhurst, the walk isn't as far as you think and the shady side streets are lovely and crowded with Craftsman homes.
