About
The Glendale dining scene continues to be on the sleepy side, lagging far behind neighboring Pasadena to the east and burgeoning Los Feliz to the west. But there are a number of excellent Italian restaurants in this city, which is a major banking and commercial center.
One very solid establishment is Far Niente, a marginally romantic spot a couple doors from the beautifully restored Alex Theatre, which makes it ideal for a pre-show supper. Two dining rooms offer slightly different experiences. The high-ceilinged wood-sheathed room on the north side of the restaurant, bathed in a flattering glow, offers a slightly more sophisticated ambiance.
An unusual, inflated dome of crackly focaccia bread, straight from a wood-burning oven, arrives drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. The pastas are generally the way to go here, and recommended dishes include rigatoni boscaiola (porcini mushrooms and creamy tomato sauce) or fettuccine with lobster and scallops in cognac cream. However, a nice selection of fish and meats is also available. And desserts--including terrific gelato in uncommon flavors--are excellent. Dinner for two: $60.
