As charming as this restaurant's 60s-era front seems from the rapidly changing York Blvd. in Highland Park, things get even more inviting once you walk through its doors. A provocatively off-center golden painting of restaurant founders Gustavo and Irene Montes rendered on a large piece of wood greets you as you check in with the host, and a series of booths, tables and chairs are situated throughout the dining room and bar, giving the room an airy feel. Start with their classic house margarita or the tempting "Mexican Russian," a below-the-border take on the bowling alley staple featuring horchata, and choose from any number of house specialties like the zucchini-rich Calabasitas con Elote or the smoky and vaguely addictive Barbacoa plate, a stew-like concoction of slow-roasted beef sautéed with onions and cilantro.
