Located on the corner of 1st St. and Central Ave., Cuba Central is one of the few non-Japanese restaurants in the Little Tokyo vicinity. The vibe is colorful and comfortable, with walls painted in warm primary colors, red tile floors and a soothing outside dining patio shaded by wide grass-thatched umbrellas. Lively Cuban tunes play over the house sound system, giving you the feeling that you’re actually in a tropical beachside hideaway rather than the hurly burly outer edge of downtown L.A. Lunch and dinner are served daily. Traditional pressed Cuban sandwiches stuffed with a variety of succulent meats are available but the best offerings are the Cuban specialty platters. The mojito chicken – served with rice, beans and plantains – practically falls right off the bone. The grilled shrimp, doused with lemon, garlic and Caribbean salsa, is spectacular. Even better are the half-off happy hour drink prices (Mon.-Fri. 3-7 p.m.).
