About
In the fast-moving and trendy Los Angeles restaurant scene, any place that lasts 16 years has earned the right to be called an institution. Chaya Venice is just such an establishment, though it still shows the exuberance of a youngster. Its sushi has always been among the best on the Westside and its seafood menu is surprisingly daring. If one accepts that décor is an integral part of the dining experience, Chaya’s wispy rice-paper sculptures certainly enrich one’s meal. The typical crowd at Chaya is usually two of the following three things: young, pretty and rich. This isn’t a place to meet people; it’s a place to get to know someone better over sake and toro. If you’re budget-conscious, stick to the happy hour menu which lasts daily from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and includes the usual suspects (California roll, spicy tuna roll, calamari). Since it’s part of the Main Street crush, go with valet when you park to save time and a headache.
