Imagine a French bistro filtered through the prism of Southern California, and Café Marguerite would probably be the perfect result. It’s neither authentic French nor tacky L.A., but a strange hybrid that works most of the time (as the typically large crowds attest). While the indoor room is cozy and filled with country décor, it’s always best to wait for an outdoor table where you can watch people stream towards the nearby beach. Tourists are usually too frightened to get past Marguerite’s imposing maitre’d, so you’ll find a crowd inside that is very local. The breakfast and lunch menus can be a little more Continental, so go at dinner if you absolutely must have truly French food. The rack of lamb served medium-rare is the house specialty, but you can’t go wrong with any of the other typical bistro items (bouillabaisse, steak frites, coq au vin).
