Conceived as a one-stop shop for the perfect cake, card, and gift, Big Sugar Bakeshop offers an array of cakes and cupcakes so irresistible that you may forget about the birthday girl (or boy) altogether. Like the handcrafted letterpress cards they sell, the baked goods are infused with a touch of nostalgia, novelty, and artistry. Cakes and cupcakes look lovingly frosted – not a crest of icing out of place – with minimalist candy toppings (no garish buttercream roses here). Most popular are the Southern comforts of red velvet, in both layer cake and cupcake form, and hummingbird cupcakes. The down-home fare also includes mom’s apple pie and “State Fair” oatmeal cookies. The confectionery turns out hand-molded buckeyes (an Ohio tradition) and soda fountain fudge. It’s a kid-in-a-candy-store type of place, with plenty of children’s games and curios displayed right at kid height. For the adults, there’s complimentary coffee.
