Barney's Beanery, Santa Monica

A full-service restaurant and bar with a legendary name, this outpost of Barney’s Beanery is not graced by the lingering echoes of Jim Morrison urinating on the bar, or the fateful reverberations of Janis Joplin ordering her final nightcap — those distinctions belong to the West Hollywood original. And yet, thanks to the inane amount of Route 66-style interstate Americana and rock ‘n’ roll detritus plastered to the walls and ceilings, one can’t help but recall the stars of old here. Pick a classic hubcab, license plate, beach cruiser, motorcycle or rock-music totem, and it’s guaranteed to be part of the visual flair at this upstairs-downstairs food emporium and beer barn. And it is an emporium: The 12-page menu is rumored to have a thousand items, and while that may be a stretch, one can find every kind of American-style breakfast item, burger, sandwich, hot dog, chili, pizza, pasta, salad and southwestern dish represented at a reasonable price. With dozens of beers from all over the globe on tap and in bottles, there’s more good news for boozers, particularly on weekdays between 4 and 7 p.m., when domestics are $2.75, imports are $3 and well drinks are $3.50. Then again, one might choose to get one’s kicks at the shuffleboard, pool table, air hockey and foosball tables in the rumpus room.
