Catering to a lively neighborhood crowd, Canelé's unassuming chalkboard menu may not boast any showy, Michelin-endorsed displays of culinary derring-do, but the restaurant's ability to wring a fair amount of pleasure from the simplest of dishes is indicitive of why its cramped tables are always in demand (especially on weekends). Rack of lamb, beef bourguignon on wide noodles and roast chicken are among the regular features, and the wine list is small but tastefully chosen. Plus there's something comforting about being served wine in a small, stemless glass. Stick around for dessert or enjoy a crisp, nugget-sized sweet bread on your way out the door, on the house.
