San Pedro locals and newcomers – those demographically-desirable urban professionals moving into the new lofts and condos – now have a classy steakhouse in the downtown district. The heart and soul of the menu is rib eye, New York strip steak, filet mignon and other all-time favorites from land and sea. But, Chef Gabriel Contreras can’t name his signature dishes. Ask him and he’ll run his hand over every page of the menu to signal his personal attachment to each and every selection. American Kobe beef and porcini mushroom ravioli is one of the chef’s globally-inspired appetizers. Short rib sliders are served at both the bar and in the dining room, where they have a strong following. Meat eaters get to choose between five housemade sauces for the steak. Lamb, chicken, pork, veal and seafood offer alternatives to red meat. Other downtown San Pedro dining destinations include Nosh Cafe, Mishi’s Strudel, Marcello Restaurant, Niko’s Pizzeria, Porky’s BBQ, the Whale & Ale and San Pedro Brewing Company. Nightlife is happening in there on the chophouse stage Thursdays through Sundays. The drinks are also flowing at Crimsin and Blu at the Crowne Plaza hotel.

Tips: Spice up your steak with a taste of the unusual chimichurri sauce. Described as an “herb salsa,” it’s a zesty combination of parsley, cilantro, olive oil and powerful doses of garlic, citrus and pepper.
