"Id Rather Be Right," the 1937 Broadway musical comedy by Rodgers and Hart that is currently playing at the Hudson Mainstage Theatre in Hollywood is well worth seeing.
It is a story about a young man and his fiance attending a concert on a summer night in Central Park, New York; and when he falls asleep (during the concert, of course) he concocts a most imaginative dream consisting of an array of personages in the highest echelons of the United States government of 1937.
The young man, Phil Barker (played by Stephen Vendette) and his girl, Peggy Jones (played by Christina Valo) encounter President Franklin D. Roosevelt, his cabinet, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Charles Evans Hughes, associate justices, other government officials, and even Roosevelt's mother. They all pop out from behind trees and benches in Central Park. FDR (played by Joe Joyce) wants to help Phil and Peggy out by balancing the budget so they can afford to get married.
All 14 of the very talented actors project a real "feeling" for the period of the 1930's with their perceptive acumen. Many concerns of that time parallel with those of today...so in that sense the play is not dated.
Brian O'Halloran is the musical director and pianist; and along with John Harvey, the percussionist, they skillfully back up all of the song and dance routines with their gifted attributes.
The show works beautifully because it harmoniously structures a silly disjointed dream with an upbeat ending; in other words, LOVE CONQUERS ALL!
"I'd Rather Be Right," in two acts, runs until Sunday, June 1st. Performances are: Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 8:00p.m., and Sunday at 3:00p.m.
Please go and see this delightfully entertaining production. You'll leave the theatre with a blithe spirit!
I give it four stars.
