Saint Joan

"Saint Joan delivers"

abraham's Rating

It is very rare to see Shaw in Los Angeles, not to mention the rareity of seeing Saint Joan performed at all. Dawn Davis as Saint Joan and an incredible supporting cast deliver an inspired production of this amazing play. There were moments that I believed that this Joan was actually speaking to god and when she bade us listen for voices I found myself sitting forward in my seat and listening. Davis' performance as Joan was electric and the true heart of the show. As Shaw states in this play again and again: "there is something about his girl."
There were many theatrical pitfalls that one could fall into when doing a production such as this which I felt were side stepped beautifully. The role of the Dauphin (played by Tom Fonss), for example, provided moments of light humor through this portrayal of his vulnerable and humorous childlike traits. The direction by Matthew Kellen Burgos, is gratefully minimalist. He allows the word of Shaw to speak clearly through the actors and saves most added movement for scene transitions which serve as what feels like a musical interlude utilizing text as music.
All in all, an amazing production of Joan, and for Los Angeles theatre, a miraculous one.
