The great L.A. barbecue roundup, part 2

Barbecue, barbeque, BBQ, B-B-Q, bar-b-cue, bar-b-que, bar-b-q... however you spell it, the weather's turning warmer and that means one thing -- the smell of grilling in the air. Here's the second half of a roundup of the best barbecue L.A. has to offer. Click here for the first half of the list.

7. Mom's Bar-B-Q House   Van Nuys

Don't be fooled by the location (a dingy corner of an even dingier Van Nuys strip mall) or the low-rent interior, Mom's makes some of the best barbecue in all of Los Angeles county.

8. Mr. Cecil's California Ribs   Westside

Inside its round Southern eating room, Mr. Cecil's California Ribs serves up plates of meat to dream about.

10. Naples Rib Company   Long Beach

Naples Rib Company may have three locations (the others are in Costa Mesa and Ladera Ranch), but this isn't a cookie-cutter franchise rib joint.

11. Newport Rib Company   Costa Mesa

Naples is a family-owned establishment with a comfortable atmosphere. Along with ribs, the menu features spicy Louisiana sausages, brisket and barbecued chicken.

12. Newport Rib Company   Ladera Ranch

Naples is a family-owned establishment with a comfortable atmosphere. Along with ribs, the menu features spicy Louisiana sausages, brisket and barbecued chicken.

14. The Oak Pit Texas Style BBQ   Ventura County

Most people drive past the Oak Pit for years before taking the gamble on its food, but the reaction when they finally hunker down with one of the legendary burgers, tri-tip sandwiches or potato salad is an overwhelmingly universal, "Why didn't I stop here before?"

15. The Original Texas Barbeque King   South L.A.

After several years at the corner of Figueroa & Sunset/Cesar Chavez, BBQ King has moved South of Exposition Park. They haven't yet got their new sign up, so look for a sign that says "The Pit."

16. Outdoor Grill   Culver City

All of the cooking is done on a huge outdoor grill. Fans seem divided over what's best: the tri-tip or the baby back ribs.

17. Pecos Bill's Bar-B-Q   Glendale

The barbecue is wet and sloppy at Pecos Bill's Pit B-B-Q, and that's the way the regulars like it at this 56-year-old neighborhood 'cue shack. On weekends, there are good pork ribs that sell out fast; as the sign says, it's open till 3 p.m. "or till the meat runs out."

18. Phillips Barbecue   Leimert Park

Smoky, tangy, delicious Southern-meets-L.A. barbecue that comes in your choice of meat: baby back ribs, small ends, chicken links, pork ribs, beef ribs, sliced beef, beef links, rib tips or barbecued chicken.

19. Phillips Barbecue II   Inglewood

Smoky, tangy, delicious Southern-meets-L.A. barbecue that comes in your choice of meat: baby back ribs, small ends, chicken links, pork ribs, beef ribs, sliced beef, beef links, rib tips or barbecued chicken.

20. Porky's BBQ   Inglewood

From pork ribs to baby backs to brisket and links (both hot and mild) this barbecue joint knows how to bring the flavor.

21. Prayer Assembly Church of God in Christ   Los Angeles County

They only serve barbecue on the weekends, and they serve it from a modest catering truck in the church's parking lot, but that hasn't stopped penitents from making the pilgrimage to the Prayer Assembly Church of God in Christ.

23. Reddi Chick   Santa Monica

Reddi Chick is a way of life for untold numbers of Westsiders, and the BBQ chicken is one reason why (the other reason is the ribs).

24. Rib Nest   Gardena

Locals love the spicy barbecue sauce and mighty beef ribs. The meat is so tender it nearly falls off the bone.

25. Ribs U.S.A.   Burbank

If not for the Dodgers swag, you might think you were in Arkansas. It feels like it fell through a wormhole into Burbank. It is, if the menu is to be believed, “Where people go when they’re hungry for good food” and home to “America’s #1 Hot Chicken Wings.”

26. Robin's Woodfire BBQ & Grill   Pasadena

Who'd ever imagine that a suburban family restaurant could morph into a terrific barbecue place? That's exactly what has happened at the Pasadena restaurant formerly known as Robin's.

27. Smokin' Jack's Kansas City BBQ   Burbank

Authentic Kansas City-style barbecue featuring, ribs, chicken, etc. as well as some oddball menu items like fried pickles. Beer connoisseurs appreciate the 41 beer selections on tap.

29. Spring Street Smokehouse   Chinatown

It doesn't look like a barbecue joint, and the menu is a tad odd, but the Spring Street Smoke House knows its smoked meats.
