Santa Monica's best-kept secret for traditional Mexican food, Gilbert's El Indio serves up delicious meals at prices so affordable you would think you were ordering from a drive-through window. It's a down-to-earth place: Chipped brick walls festooned with Mexican folk-art and the faded photos of restaurant patrons at play bespeak a friendly fiesta and the attentive waiters keep it that way. Don't let the cash-only policy deter you. The entrees are just $6 to $11, and you can't go wrong with the menu. The tacos, enchiladas and albondigas soup are superb, while the plato de carnitas--oven-fried pork garnished with onions and cilantro--is a decadent delight. Forget about fancy California-style cuisine or diet anything, and get comfortable with the concept of departing stuffed like a luau pig.
