La Cabañita

"Leave the hipsters behind for this buried treasure"

ChrisBarton's Rating

For the last few years I've been on a search -- a quest, really -- for a margarita that tops the mighty, sweet-sour magic that lives inside the house margarita at La Cabanita. El Compadre, Mexico City, El Coyote, they've all paled against the $6 wonders served at this little neighborhood joint. And once you start factoring in the food, there's really no comparison with the more stylish lights along L.A.'s hipster corridor.

Start with the buttery carrot soup (which really goes to another place with a little bit of the roasted salsa that comes with the chips) and from there you'll be fine whether you opt for their excellent customized chile relleno-inspired dishes (the chile en nogada for beef, la cabanita for chicken or the spicy vegetariano), the smoky sweet enchiladas de mole or the tasty varieties of tacos. All this and the margaritas to match -- I have yet to meet this place's equal.
