About
Semele was the mother of Dionysus, the patron god of Greek theater, and SOSE takes their craft that seriously. A relatively young troupe, actor/writer/producer Matthew McCray founded it in 2001, using his own play "Earthlings" as its inaugural production. Since then, SOSE has racked up a decent handful of awards and some admiring press mounting eclectic and innovative works. Their storefront, black-box home, located in what could only charitably be described as Silver Lake, seats no more than 50, a compliment to the troupe's off-the-beaten path approach.
While it may appear that you're in the middle of nowhere, in fact, you're walking distance from Medusa Lounge, the baroque phoenix which rose from the Lowenbrau's kitschy ashes, as well as the exqusitly crafted slices of Shibucho's sushi.
Tips: Parking--and the street's your only option--can be surprisingly difficult. Arrive early, or start driving up into the hills behind the theater to grab a spot.
