The grande dame of Hollywood theaters and a splendid example of richly detailed Art Deco design, the Pantages is a must-see for any visitors who think that Los Angeles has no buildings older than the latest mini-mall.
The theater features an endless balcony ceiling that tops the rear orchestra section. But perhaps even more overwhelming than the theater itself is the monumental lobby, so glorious that you'll have a hard time pulling yourself away to go back for the second act. The best seats are mid-orchestra and lowest balcony because the acoustics are hit and miss here.
The Pantages also has the advantage of being centrally located in the middle of Hollywood, leaving theater goers with plenty of options for pre- and post- performance dining and cocktails. Those looking for a glamorous scene need only cross the street to Katsuya and S Bar. For after-show munchies, The Hungry Cat, Magnolia and The Waffle are all open late daily. If the olive in your martini is your idea of a meal, grab it at The Well on Argyle or simply pop in to the Pantages' next-door neighbor, Frolic Room.
