The productions at this formerly creaky community theater have experienced a boost in quality and sophistication, corresponding with the growth in the old-town section of San Juan Capistrano.
Revivals of American fare like ''Laura'' alternate with new full-length and one-act plays as the playhouse strives to be a home for playwrights in south Orange County. The former modular seating arrangement is now fixed, which makes for a less fun theatergoing experience, but improved sight lines.
The Camino Real makes for a good stop when visiting this always charming, preserved corner of Old California. You don't even need to drive, since the Amtrak train station is just a few blocks away.
