About
One of the most prestigious art museums in the world, the Norton Simon is a treasure chest of old world and modern masterpieces.
The 12,000-piece collection -- which is one of the preeminent art collections in the West -- includes Renaissance, Old Master and Modern paintings by a wide range of stellar artists.
You'll find exquisite sculpture from South Asia, shown to remarkable advantage; a display of 14 paintings and pastels by Edgar Degas, plus 36 bronzes posthumously cast directly from his original waxes.
There's even a room largely dedicated to some fine examples of postwar art made in L.A.
Visiting
The museum is open every day except Tuesdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's.
Hours are 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursdays.
General admission is $8 for adults and $4 for seniors. Admission is free for all visitors the first Friday of every month from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
There is free parking at the museum. No reservations are requried. For those who wish to take public transportation, bus line #180/181 stops in front of the museum. The Memorial Park Station on the Gold Line is the closest Metro Rail station to the museum. The station is located at 125 East Holly Street and Arroyo Parkway.
Dining and entertainment
The museum has one restaurant -- the Garden Café, which is operated by Patina. Located in the museum's celebrated sculpture garden, the café offers daily specials as well as salads, sandwiches, baked goods and beverages.
Nearby dining options include Villa Sorriso Ristorante, a charming Italian restaurant. Gaucho Grill serves Argentinean cuisine -- there's a lunch special menu served until 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
For dessert, check out Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop, which serves Ghirardelli's famous chocolate sundaes.
